One of the most awaited smartphones of 2017, the OnePlus 5 has arrived in India in two variants. The entry level version, running the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, 6GB RAM and 64GB internal storage has been priced at Rs32,999 while the higher spec variant with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage will sport a sticker price of Rs37,999. These phones are now considerably more expensive than any other OnePlus phone thus far. The OnePlus phones land in a price category that already has some very good devices available, across the band. Here are some of the other Android phones that you can also consider, in the same budget as the OnePlus 5 variants.
This finely crafted phone blends together metal and glass in a perfect cocktail. The G6’s FullVision screen has the taller 18:9 aspect ratio—this is one of the two phones (the other being the Samsung Galaxy S8 series) to do so. It runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor with 4 GB RAM, and a 3,300mAh battery. Audio aficionados will find value in the ES9218+Sabre Quad DAC (digital to analogue converter) hardware which supports 24-bit and 32-bit high-resolution audio. But the real party piece would be the dual 13-megapixel cameras, each using a Sony IMX258 sensor. They reproduce the finer details well, and it is with the High dynamic range (HDR) photographs that the G6 truly shines.
Moto Z2 Play
The updated Z2 Play from Motorola may not have the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon processor (it runs the octa-core Snapdragon 626 instead), but with 4GB RAM and a clean Android interface, it has more than enough grunt under the hood. The 5.5-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display does well on most fronts. There is a 12-megapixel camera which is quite capable, the 3,000mAh battery which will easily last a day and a bit more and some contextual artificial intelligence added to the mix. But, the Z2 Play’s highlight is the ability to attach “mods”, such as the Hasselblad camera mod, JBL SoundBoost speaker and an Incipio offGRID battery mod, for instance—these are designed to significantly enhance the capabilities of the phone in individual aspects.
The Honor 8 is one of the most beautiful phones below the Rs30,000 price point. It is a smooth blend of glass and aluminium, in what finally emerges as a design that’ll not get surpassed anytime soon. The dual 12-megapixel cameras take some well detailed and high quality photos, something that most rivals are not able to compete against. No slouch when it comes to performance either, with the powerful Kirin 950 processor paired with 4GB RAM. The 3,000mAh battery is at par with the rivals. What would appeal to many users is the compact footprint, partly because of the slightly smaller 5.2-inch Full HD display and because of the genuinely thin bezels around the screen.
Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro
This is the phone that will appeal to anyone who doesn’t mind using and carrying around a phone that has a screen larger than 5.5-inches. The 6-inch Full HD display is quite crisp and useable. It runs the Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 processor, with 6GB of RAM—if nothing else, this much RAM would enable even smoother multi-tasking. As one would expect, this big phone packs in a big battery too, with the 4,000mAh capacity enough to easily last a day and a bit more. There is a 16-megapixel camera too, which can take some fairly good photos as long as the lighting is adequate. Chances are, you will buy this if you genuinely need a phone that slots in perfectly as the smartphone and tablet alternative.
While the OnePlus 3T is around, it will remain a competition to the OnePlus 5. Anyone who doesn’t necessarily require the cutting-edge processor of the 5, will be more than happy with the 3T as an option. The 5.5-inch Full HD display is perhaps not the most vivid in terms of colour richness, but it is very comfortable to use. It runs a very powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, with 6GB RAM, and performance is silky smooth. That is also partly because of the clutter free Android experience that the Oxygen OS offers. The 16-megapixel camera has dual optical and electronic stabilization. It has a 3,400mAh battery which is quite consistently able to last more than a day with medium intensity usage.
